Webinar: Achieving professional excellence in Consulting and Internal Audit- Koushik Balasubramanian

Achieving professional excellence in Consulting and Internal Audit

On 02 August 2020 SIDTM students welcomed Mr. Koushik Balasubramanian, Senior Director, Protiviti India Member Pvt. Ltd.for a Guest Lecture on the topic – “Achieving professional excellence in Consulting and Internal Audit”. Mr. Balasubramanian has been in the consulting domain for close to 10 years, prior to which he held executive-level positions in major Telecom companies in India.

Owing to his wide and rich experience of the Telecommunications sub-domains, Mr. Balasubramanian started his discussion from the point where he began his career back in 2002, in Idea Cellular’s sales department. From there on, he discussed his key learnings and lessons from his early corporate days. He emphasized that Sales was not only about the act of selling to the customer but also knowing the subject matter really well.

He related his early days to the career aspirations of us students by defining what are the expectations we should be having while scaling the corporate ladder. The emphasis, he says, is not upon receiving umpteen benefits but upon performing and growing. We were delighted as he mentioned the “Projection” theory and how it is built over time. A number of false notions did not remain as he described the appropriate ways of contributing directly as an employee, at any level.

Key Insights into how a Consulting Works

Mr. Balasubramanian provided some key insights from his recent experiences at Protiviti. The entire process of risk consulting was encapsulated in 3-4 simple steps and he clarified exactly how it works. He also did provide some insight for career progression and responsibilities as a mid to senior-level executive in a Consulting Firm. Finally, Mr. Balasubramanian gave his 10 ‘Success Mantras’ for succeeding in any industry.

Mr. Balasubramanian ended the session by decoding the ‘attitude’ he desired in aspiring professionals and how to make the best use of timing and opportunities. He added that solving problems was not meant to be done in a ‘mechanical’ way, but with a thorough and creative approach.

The session was indeed an insightful one. As students, not only did we have the opportunity to interact with an experienced professional like Mr. Balasubramanian, but we also received extremely enriching and hard-learned lessons in a simple, engaging manner.
